A Letter to My Son on His 2nd Birthday

Steven,

It's hard to believe another year of our lives has gone by already. Its even harder to believe that you are 2 years old today! Becoming your mother was something I wanted my whole life but could have never anticipated just how amazing it truly would be. Its been the biggest blessing watching you grow this year from a "baby" at 1 year old to an independent 2 year old. You can do so much on your own now and its truly astounding how much you've grown in the past year.

Most people who don't know you, don't believe you are only 1. They think you are turning 3 this year! You are big for your age and so advanced in all your skills and talking so much, its easy to see how they would think that.

At the beginning of this year you were just saying a few words and now you can basically talk in sentences and pretty much get across what you are trying to say. You are definitely good at making what you want clear. You truly have turned into a "little man" over the past few months. You have you own wants, needs and opinions and you can voice them now (and you do, regulary).

At the beginnig of the year you had mastered walking and were getting more steady on your own. Now you love to run and jump and play. We can't keep you still! You love to hold our fingers and say "Run Mommy! Fast Mommy!"

At the beginning of this year you were still wearing diapers 24/7. Now you are about 99% potty trained at this point, which is really advanced for your age. Which, by the way, you initiated on your own and have led the way every step. You decided you wanted to start going in the potty a few months ago and then a few weeks ago decided you didn't want diapers at night or nap time anymore. And you've done great!

You can say your ABCs, count to 10 (usually), say pretty much every word we say to you including bigger words like hippopotamus or triceriptos. You do get stuck on your colors even though you know all their names, every think is "green!'. :)

You have a great personality and its been such a joy watching you develop into your own person. Right now you are a little lover. You love to give kisses and hugs and you will say "love you!" to us when we ask. You will even say it spontaneously sometimes to the dogs or when we were at the Dept of Transportation you said, "bye bye trains, love you!" You will snuggle on the couch when we watch a movie or when we read books before bed. Sometimes you'll request to hold hands in the car. You love to give other kids hugs and you are always very concerned if there is a kid around you that is crying. You'll go over and comfort them with no prompting from us. I really love that about your personality.

At the same time you are very tough and independent. You will go off and play by yourself pretty often. You want to pick out your own clothes these days including socks and shoes. You try to put them on by yourself as well. Most of the time, you can do it! If you fall down, sometimes you'll cry and sometimes you'll just keep on going.

This summer is going to be a time for transition for our family and I hope that you continue to do well with everything. You seem excited about the prospect of becoming a big brother. I know you will do better than I can ever have imagined on your own but I just hope that you never feel that you aren't still loved 110% when the baby comes. You will always be my sweet, sensitive, smart boy and I will always love you with all my heart. Happy 2nd birthday, Steven!

Love,

Your Mommy
